Our names are Scott and Ellen, and with our son Benjamin we live and work on a two-acre farm in Dixon, a small village in the Embudo Valley of Northern New Mexico.
Over the past three years we’ve been working to revive our long-neglected land: renovating the old apple and pear orchard, planting fruit trees and raspberries, amending and cover cropping our field, digging out the acequia channels, setting up irrigation systems, doing some kitchen and market gardening, and adding to our small flock of hens ... all while raising our little boy, running our own businesses (Fireball Press and Firewheel Editorial), and volunteering and working for local businesses.
We use organic methods to grow a variety of vegetables, fruit, and flowers, which we sell during the summer at the Dixon Co-op Farmers’ Market. We are also applying for a winery license in order to operate Fireball Cidery. We will specialize in high-quality, distinctive dry and sparkling alcoholic ciders made entirely from apples grown in our orchard and those of our neighbors in the Embudo and Upper Rio Grande valleys. We hope to be up and running no later than Fall 2011, and will be selling direct to area retailers and restaurants, as well as through our friends' new brewery and tasting room, Blue Heron Brewing Company, in Rinconada.
